As the major classical choral organisation in the South Lincolnshire and Greater Peterborough area, we aim to to bring top quality choral events to the area, and to perform the best concerts for our audiences that we can.
The Society goes back to at least 1879, when there was a large membership. Today we again have a large membership, of about 160 voices.
Famous associations
Two of the most famous Stamfordians of the musical world have been associated with Stamford Choral Society. Sir Malcolm Sargent, who was born in Stamford, was a conductor, and later President for twenty years until his death. Sir Michael Tippett, who attended Stamford School, has also been President. The current President is Colin Dexter OBE, another Stamfordian, known principally as a novelist, and creator of the music-loving TV detective, Inspector Morse.
Since Sir Malcolm’s death in 1967, the Society has celebrated his contribution to music with the Malcolm Sargent Concert, in conjunction with the Stamford Endowed Schools Choral Society. This concert takes place every three years, and the next one will be performed in 2007.
Cathedral concerts
Since 2001 (a Malcolm Sargent year) our May concerts have taken place in Peterborough Cathedral, generally accompanied by a professional orchestra.
Top soloists
On the performance side we have been able to attract top-quality soloists over the years, the most notable recently being Emma Bell, Christopher Maltman, Jane Eaglen and Roderick Williams. More about previous concerts and soloists.
Constitution
The society's constitiution was amended at an extraordinary General Meeting on 14 March 2006. See the amended constitution.
